The D23 Expo event, currently taking over the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, has kicked off to a flying start, with Day One hosting some incredible panels and presentations, including its DISNEY LEGENDS roll-out (inducting the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Ming-Na Wen and Bette Midler), a celebration of 50 years of THE HAUNTED MANSION and a fascinating look into THE MUSIC AND SOUNDS OF STAR WARS: GALAXY’S EDGE, for all those theme park nuts out there.
But for us genre fans around the world, the big presentation was for Disney’s new flagship streaming service, DISNEY+, due to launch in the US and Canada on 12th November 2019 (with the rest of the planet following on its heels in the New Year). As with all things, content is king and Disney are certainly setting out its stall with a massive library of shows and films from across its hu-uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge collection of companies, as well as a host of original content – it was this content that panel host Yvette Nicole Brown was there to present to the baying throng.
From a vibrant musical number from HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THE SERIES (Disney once again reminding conventions everywhere that, when it comes to grabbing the attention of your audience, just putting screengrabs and title cards on a screen just doesn’t cut the mustard) to cast appearances and series revelations from the likes of Kathleen Kennedy (Lucasfilm) and Kevin Feige (Marvel Studios – ooh, he’s had a busy week this week, hasn’t he??), fans have been blown away by what they will be able to see on the small screen very soon.
And having Ewan McGregor come out to reveal that he’s returning to the STAR WARS fold, reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, to a standing ovation – that was just the cherry on top of the cake.
