The first day of ECCC 2019 has already closed, and Dan Berry and Sam Beard both had amazing experiences! Between panels, interviews, and of course buying too many things that will fit in (Sam’s) suitcases, it was a perfectly well rounded day of nerdom.
Throughout the weekend keep an eye out for interview recordings from this space for the 20+ talks scheduled. Today Sam spoke to Django Wexler, a writer who recently published a YA novel titled Ship of Smoke and Steel. Sam and Django both have a background in computer science and had a great time talking about the ways computation plays a role in storytelling.
Sam also spoke with author Margaret Owen about her upcoming debut novel, Merciful Crow. It won’t be available for purchase until July, so more on that chat will go up closer to release date. The conversation started with books and made its way to D&D, how cool birds are, and the role of social media in publishing.
Zack Kaplan was also on Sam’s interview list today. He has written a few graphic novel series including Eclipse, & Lost City Explorers. That interview will be up very soon!
Dan also had a busy day as he was running around the convention floor snapping pictures of some of the sites he saw, as well as running to the ECCC Main Stage which was at a hotel 3 blocks away from the convention center. He managed to be in the audience for some interesting spotlight panels including Gail Simone, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Matt Wagner, and Peter Capaldi.
He also managed to get 3 interviews knocked out. Artist Philip Sevy, writer Magdalene Vissagio, and Chris Sanchez of indie comic publisher Mad Cave Studios (interview will be posted today) all gave up some time on their busy day 1 of ECCC to speak with him.
Overall, it was a great first day at the largest comic con in the Pacific Northwest and day 2 will be as busy for both Sam and Dan, as they have at least 5 interviews today scheduled.
