BOOM! Studios – NEWS WEEK (December 3rd, 2018)

This is our first weekly recap of the week of news from BOOM! Studios.

There was a lot of news from them this week including a new graphic novel titled WAVESa 12 issue series titled THE AVANT-GUARDS, as well as news from their BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and FIREFLY lines, and more.

We had covered the WAVES and THE AVANT-GUARDS news in their own posts (links to them are above), so we will begin this recap with the Buffy news.

One of the more memorable episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer was HUSH and now the main Gentleman as portrayed wonderfully by Doug Jones along with 2 others will be featured prominently on a variant cover for issue #3 of the series from Scott Buoncristiano.

The series is a retelling of the iconic television program from the very beginning from the creative team of writer Jordie Bellaire and artist Dan Mora, and of course Joss Whedon is also involved as a story consultant.

In addition to the variant cover from Buoncristiano, the issue will have a few other cover versions including main covers from Matthew Taylor, and  Kevin Wada and a second variant cover from Matt Smith.

The Taylor cover will feature Cordelia Chase in her cheerleader outfit with an ominously looking Spike over her shoulder, while the Smith cover will feature a previous Slayer from the Viking age.

Also this week was the news that one of the more memorable characters from the short-lived series FIREFLY will get a special issue highlighting her origin.

Coming in March of 2019 will be FIREFLY: BAD COMPANY and with it will be a story detailing Saffron’s early life before her marriage to Mal

When the issue from writer Josh Lee Gordon and artist Francesco Mortarino hits shelves, it will do so with two cover versions; the main one from Diego Galindo and a variant from Jamal Campbell.

Coming next January will be the a special one-shot titled WWE: FOREVER #1 and this week a preview some of the cover and interior art was released.

The oversized special will detail some of the legendary stories from the annals of the WWF (prior to the name change to WWE) including ones about legends like Bret Hart, the late Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, Razor Ramon, Ted DiBiase, and more.

The issue will be released on January 30th with multiple cover versions including the main cover from Rahzzah, a wraparound preorder cover by Kendall Goode, as well as a variant cover from Marco D’Alfonso that will connect to the variant covers for WWE #25 and the WWE WRESTLEMANIA 2019 SPECIAL.

Scott Buoncristiano Honors “HUSH” in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #3

All-New Cover Reveal Casts a Spotlight on The Most-Anticipated Pop Culture ReVAMP of 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 5, 2018) – BOOM! Studios today unveiled a variant cover to BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #3 by horror illustrator Scott Buoncristiano (Harry Potter: Magical Film Projections, Dead Rabbit) featuring a tribute to the iconic television episode “Hush.” The next chapter of the hotly-anticipated series will debut in-stores March 13th, 2019, in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products.

The reimagining of Joss Whedon’s groundbreaking series reaches the penultimate chapter of the first arc as Buffy and the Scooby Gang (the name was Xander’s idea, he’s workshopping it, it probably won’t stick) delve deeper into the heart of Sunnydale’s underbelly—and make a shocking discovery about the true nature of the Hellmouth. Meanwhile, Drusilla – AKA THE MISTRESS – sets her sights on Cordelia, as Cordy and Spike find accidental common ground.

Welcome back to the Hellmouth as Eisner Award-nominated writer Jordie Bellaire (Redlands) and Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Klaus, Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), along with series creator and story consultant Joss Whedon (the visionary writer/director behind Firefly, Marvel’s The Avengers, and more), reimagine the groundbreaking pop culture phenomenon from the very beginning.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer premiered on the WB Network on March 10th, 1997. The Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated series, which ran for seven seasons from 1997-2003, stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as “Buffy Summers.” Chosen to battle vampires, demons and other forces of darkness, Buffy is aided by a Watcher who guides and teaches her as she surrounds herself with a circle of friends called the “Scooby Gang.”

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #3 features main covers by Mondo illustrator Matthew Taylor and fan favorite artist Kevin Wada (She-Hulk), along with a variant cover by Matt Smith (Barbarian Lord).

“Some episodes of Buffy make you sad or happy or excited or maybe even terrified. But ‘Hush’ made you feel all of them at the same time and it’s one of the reasons it remains a high watermark for storytelling,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Scott Buoncristiano’s cover conjures up that emotional stake to the heart perfectly on this cover, as we continue our tribute the best episodes of Buffy.”

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER is the latest release from BOOM! FIREFLY: BAD COMPANY Reveals The Secret Origin of Saffron

The Most Dangerous Woman in the ‘Verse Returns With A New Special in March 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 6, 2018) – BOOM! Studios today announced FIREFLY: BAD COMPANY #1, the first over-sized special issue from the company’s sold out continuation of Joss Whedon’s sci-fi epic, in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products.

Arriving in comic shops March 2019, writer Josh Lee Gordon and artist Francesco Mortarino (Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers) reveal the secret origin of the most belovedFirefly characters in the ’Verse—SAFFRON! Journey through the early days of Saffron’s life, before her fateful “marriage” to our Captain Mal, and how she’s connected to the bounty currently on Mal’s head in the pages of Firefly.

“Though we only meet Saffron briefly, it’s a testament to the richness of Firefly and its world that she remains endlessly compelling all these years later.” said writer, Josh Lee Gordon. “The original series remains a tremendous influence on my work, and I’m thrilled by this opportunity to contribute something of my own to the ‘Verse.”

“I’m really excited to work on such a famous Joss Whedon property.” said artist, Francesco Mortarino. “It will be really challenging to draw such an appreciated and beloved character as Saffron, and I’m looking forward to giving it my best!”

FIREFLY: BAD COMPANY #1 features a main cover by Diego Galindo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) and a variant cover by Jamal Campbell (Green Arrow).

“Saffron is one of the most fascinating characters in Firefly — in just a handful of appearances, she rocketed to fan-favorite with the perfect mix of charisma, cunning and controlled chaos that makes us want to know what quickly became clear was unknowable…neither by us, nor by Saffron herself. But what we do know is that she’s not someone to be crossed, and her  drive to survive by any means necessary makes her one of those most dangerous characters our crew has encountered,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Josh and Francesco are digging into not just who Saffron is to the people in her life, but why she wears those faces and what it means for her past, present and future. This is just the beginning of BOOM! Studios’ plans to dig deeper into the untold stories from Firefly that fans have demanded…and Saffron has a big role to play in 2019!”

Created by Whedon and set 500 years in the future in the wake of a universal civil war,Firefly centers on the crew of Serenity, a small transport spaceship that doesn’t have a planet to call home. Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, a defeated soldier who opposed the unification of the planets by the totalitarian governed Alliance, will undertake any job — legal or not — to stay afloat and keep his crew fed. Thrust together by necessity but staying together out of loyalty, these disparate men and women are seeking adventure and the good life, but face constant challenges on the new frontier, such as avoiding capture by the Alliance, and evading the dangers you find on the fringes of the universe.

FIREFLY is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to a world-class group of licensed comic book series and ambitious original series, including Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Planet of the Apes, Abbott, Mech Cadet Yu, Grass Kings, and Klaus

Print copies of FIREFLY: BAD COMPANY #1 will be available for sale on March 20, 2019 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one).
