DC’S STARGIRL S2 E7 ‘Summer School: Chapter Seven’ review – Spooky Letdown

Coming off the battle royal between the Stargirl crew and Cindy’s collection of baddies, Stargirl was bound for a letdown.  Unfortunately, Stargirl met this poor expectation, delivering a disappointing episode. This installment focused on Yolanda as she continues to deal with her feelings in the aftermath of her killing of Brainwave in season 1.

On the positive side Stargirl has done a decent job of establishing Yolanda’s religious convictions. That led to her initial problem with the picture she took and explains why she’d feel guilty about killing a villain who murdered lots of people (and tried to kill her and her friends). On the negative side, Yolanda has often been ignored on the show and her guilt seems to be her only defining trait at this point, which isn’t enough to sustain a character. I like her, but I’m not as invested in her as this episode required.

This episode also diverged from its normal tone, veering towards a horror aesthetic. Kudos to Stargirl for trying something new, but it felt a bit jarring and the execution just wasn’t there. While last episode had great special effects and fighting, this episode relied on that annoying ‘Brainwave screeching sound.’ It lacks any visuals whatsoever and is more annoying than interesting or scary. This episode also relies on some tired storytelling cop outs which I won’t get into to avoid spoilers.

Stargirl remains one of my favorite shows, but this episode is largely forgettable. Time will tell if anything happened of consequence for the series going forward, but as of now, it seems skippable.
