EVE STRANGER #1 Review: Think MEMENTO but with a Bad-Ass Lady

David Barnett (Author) • Philip Bond (Artist, Cover Artist) • Eva de la Cruz (Colorist) • Jane Heir (Letterer) • Megan Brown (Assistant Editor) • Shelly Bond (Editor)

Thanks to IDW Publishing for providing a copy of Eve Stranger #1 for review!

SYNOPSIS: You have unlimited funds, a jet-set lifestyle, and extraordinary abilities. And your bloodstream is filled with nanobombs. The contents of a syringe will deactivate them for a week and also wipe your memory. So what happens when you develop a sneaking suspicion that you’re actually working for the bad guys? EVE STRANGER, amnesiac-for-hire.

So yes, on first impression, Eve has a lot of similarities to the 2000 film Memento, but the story quickly sets itself apart through elements of science fiction that shock and scare the reader. I quickly fell in love with Eve; her purple hair and stuffed animal friend make her very endearing and it’s hard not to root for her immediately. It’s clear that there are many forces at play in Eve’s life that she may or may not be aware of.

One of the most interesting things about this issue of Eve is that she says very little. Most of the exposition comes from past-Eve. She leaves messages for herself so she has some awareness of her predicament. Her life is full of hostile forces both from within and without. Through her letters to herself she learns that she must complete seemingly impossible tasks in order to keep herself alive. It’s clear she is being physically manipulated, and possibly mentally manipulated. Who knows if she actually left these letters for herself!?

I am very excited to read more of Eve Stranger. The premise is strong, and there are a lot of moving pieces that will interest many different types of readers. There’s action, mystery, heart, and beautiful line work. You don’t even have to wait to read it, the first issue is available right now!
