GAME OF THRONES S8E2 Review: ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ AKA Who’s up for a chat with Jaime?

This episode was directed by David Nutter and written by Bryan Cogman

This article will include spoilers for Episode 1 of Season 8. Subsequent warning for Episode 2 spoilers provided as well.

This week’s episode, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms focused its gaze squarely on Winterfell. That isn’t very surprising considering that after the previous episode everyone and their aunt is in Winterfell.

This episode included several 1-on-1 moments between a lot character duos. Jaime & Dany, Jaime & Tyrion, Jaime & Brienne, Jaime & Brann, basically everyone had a chance to chat up Jaime. Preparations for the impending war with the Night King and his army are in full effect, but even that won’t stop the bravest knights from sharing some sweet Westerosi gossip.

Battle plans are drawn, new weapons are forged, and all in all things feel like they’re coming together as well as could be expected. A few scenes I never imagined I would watch cropped up in this episode, and there was a brief glimpse of everyone’s favorite albino dire wolf.

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 8 EPISODE 2 FROM HERE ON!

After revealing that Cersei never actually sent her armies to fight for the living, Dany makes the wise choice to allow Jaime to stay and fight. Not only does this show that she can look past her desire to burn anyone she dislikes, but it demonstrates how much the opinions of her advisors mean to her. She is still capable of seeing reason…for now. Near the end of the episode Jon finally tells her they are related. Not a fun conversation for anyone in their position I imagine! While it seems unlikely that Jon has immediate plans of usurping her place on the Iron Throne, Jon’s claim to rule will definitely shift the power dynamic between the pair.

It’s borderline impossible to discuss this episode without talking about the antics by the fireplace. Perhaps the most stirring moment of the episode, and the moment it is named for, is when Jaime decides to demonstrate how a Knight can name another Knight. Brienne becomes Ser Brienne within the walls of Winterfell thanks to Jaime in a moment unlike many others on this show. Naming a woman a Knight is something I never expected to see (that and Arya’s boobs), and it was a very welcome surprise! It was a wonderful moment for Jaime and Brienne, and shows how powerful her character is for the fandom and for her compatriots.

Arya’s moment with Gendry was a long time coming, and it was great to see her get something she wanted that didn’t involve murder. It showed her fear of the coming battle in a very on brand way. She didn’t hide away, but she actively choose not to spend time with men she doesn’t like, or to sit around worrying. She had a very human moment, and allowed Gendry to really choose to share it with her. As many people are saying, it was one of, if not the most, consensual sex scenes in the history of the show.

As everyone settles in for a long night waiting for the Night King to arrive with his hoard of the undead, they swap stories, songs, and drinks. Once again it was fascinating to see these previously disparate and diametrically opposed characters sitting together and enjoying one another’s company. How sad it will be next week when half of them are probably white walkers!

Only 4 episodes remain of the final season of Game of Thrones. So strange to say that it ends next month.
