Although, I have never seen any of Buffy (I know, I know!), I do know the basics. Buffy is a teenage slayer of vampires and knows some magical beings (plus some nice looking vampire guys). In Hellmouth, we get a small story arc (5 issues), that takes off running straight into what looks like a gate to hell, which is obviously called a Hellmouth. Right off the bat the story starts with a character called Anya, who is able to see the awful coming Sunnydale’s way, thanks to the villain Drusilla. As we can see within the first few pages, she moving instead of trying to help, no matter the pleading on the part of the Watchers.

This first issue was as fast paced as you could get, with Buffy literally running and kicking butt to get to this gate. It’s great fun watching her punching rat creatures in the face every time they leap to eat her face off, or in mid air to catch another human during their terror. But, through all of this I was able to admire the art style of dark tones, while at the same time the tones highlighted Buffy, so she was easy to spot. The smartass banter through chaos, that was being thrown back and forth between Spike and Buffy was another fun aspect to read.

By the end of this first issue, I was looking up when the next issue comes out (Editor’s note: Issue #2 is set for release on November 13th). I’m curious to see if Buffy and Spike will be able to save the town/world, and figure out what kind of tension is going on between them.

Hellmouth #1 is now available.
