POST AMERICANA #2 review – An Arm and A Leg (Skroce, Stewart, FONOGRAFIKS) Image Comics

Thanks to Image Comics for the review copy!

POST AMERICANA fully embraces its post-apocalyptic genre, setting the story in a wasteland full of retrofitted technology and cannibals. The art doesn’t shy away from the grittier elements of the story, from hunks of people being ready to be eaten to the violent lifestyle of the cannibal group. While a lot of the elements are common in the genre, this series brings some new ideas to the table.

First, this issue adds another fresh and interesting layer to the protagonist. This reveal makes her more interesting and provides the basis for the issue’s best action sequences. These set pieces are brilliantly conceived and cinematically carried out. You could definitely see this issue being made into a movie (though a decidedly R rated one).

After reading issue one, I was also curious about the underground bunker society. This issue provides more detail about what is going on in there. There are some interesting concepts in that side of the story as well. I’m still curious about how America came to find itself in this situation, but for now I’ll enjoy what I’m being given. In addition to giving some more information about what the bunker people are up to, the end of the issue teases a new character that could mix things up going forward as well.

POST AMERICANA doesn’t hold back on the violence and cursing, so I continue to recommend some discretion.  If severed body parts aren’t your thing, tread carefully!

The second issue (of the six part mini-series) is now out.

Check back in a few weeks for my thoughts on the third issue of the series.
