Cover of Vault Comics' SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS #1

Sera and the Royal Stars #1, is beautiful and intriguing from the cover and title alone. I had no problem jumping straight into the story, and with a character like princess Sera of Parsa, you can’t help but want to read more from page one.

The comic starts off with Sera on the battlefield, fighting of course, when she suddenly gets a vision causing her to black out. During this vision, Sera finds herself floating in space with the God entity, Mitra, in front of her.

Mitra tells her that she is the one chosen to “break the bonds placed on the eternal celestial lights”. Now, I know what your thinking, “great, another chosen one story”. But Sera isn’t just another chosen one, she doesn’t want this. This wasn’t the first time Sera got a similar vision, she’s ignored the other. It seems that her mother also got the same visions and left the family to accomplish these tasks to free the stars. What we know is that Sera’s mother never came home, and if Mitra is forcing these visions/quest upon Sera. Well, that means Sera’s mother never finished (or even started) to complete this quest. Mirta straight out threatens Sera, showing her what will happen to her family and people if she does not comply with completing this grant journey in front of her. To drive her point home, Mitra takes out Sera’s heart and replaces it with a glowing crystal. Stone cold, Mitra. Stone cold.

Oh, and that battlefield I mentioned before? Well, that was Sera’s family, her father who is ruling their kingdom. Fighting back against her uncle and cousin, along with their forces trying to take the kingdom for themselves. At the same time of this first battle we saw happening, we get our first glimpse at who might try and stop Sera from never finishing her journey (they were watching from a cliff close by). A shady looking pair of siblings (brother and sister), in purple and gold robes with horns.

Sera decides to pull the same move as her mother, and not say goodbye to her family. This does not go to plan, as Sera’s younger brother and sister come to stop her. In the end, they let her go and understands that she needs to do this. Reassuring her that the kingdom is fine without her and that they are able to fight battles without her. Yeah, this statement does not hold for long. As Sera is looking for the physical bodies of the royal stars, we see her uncle and cousin preparing to attack the kingdom (looking very menacing in their black horned and feathered armor).

Sera finds herself at an overrun temple of Mitra (or the royal stars, they pretty much go hand in hand at this point) and finds an old man talking in third person. He also can’t remember who he is, but just as him and Sera meet, they are attacked by monsters in armor (working for the purple and gold siblings? Perhaps). As they are running for their lives, you know as you do when people come at you with swords and don’t really stop to talk to make sure they have the right people they need to be attacking. Sera sees a glint of gold chains between the old man’s hands, that’s right, you guessed it! The old man is the physical form of one of the royal stars! He’s the Eyes of Bull, she frees him and as the pages come to an end. We see the two are back to back preparing for the fight coming towards them.

Sera and the Royal Stars #1 is now available.
