STAR TREK: YEAR FIVE #1 review – Where no man has gone before… (Lanzing, Kelly, Thompson, Hildebrandt, Kirchoff, Uyetake, IDW Publishing)

Jackson Lanzing (Author) Collin Kelly (Author) Stephen Thompson (Artist) Greg Hildebrandt (Cover Artist) Charlie Kirchoff (Colorist) Neil Uyetake (Letterer)

Thanks to IDW Publishing for the review copy!

Anyone who watched the show knows the Enterprise had a five year mission … but didn’t the original show only air from 1966-1969? While that is correct, IDW has helpfully started chronicling the final year of the mission of the Enterprise in comic book form. Adapting well known and beloved characters can be difficult. You want to tell original stories but you need to remain true to the characters and their voices. Star Trek (and Star Wars) fans also tend to be knowledgeable about canon and timelines, so there’s the risk of making hardcore fans mad. As a longtime fan of Star Trek, I had to see how the creative team threaded the needle.

Issue one employs the common technique of starting with a dire situation and then flashing back to see how we got there. Given the continued interest in Star Trek over the years and the fact that thanks to the movies we know the main characters survive, I’m not sure this was needed to pique my interest, but it is harmless. What did capture my attention was how well the dialogue seemed true to the characters and how much they looked like the actors who played them. You can imagine the actors reading the dialogue and it feels right. Like any Star Trek show or movie, there is plenty of tech jargon that sounds convincing enough to propel the story forward. I was also impressed with how the writers fit the story within the timeline and universe established by the TV show and movies. Simply put, this book nails the details.

Unlike the TV series it is based on, IDW’s Star Trek appears set to tell a continuing story as opposed to having standalone issues. If you have ever enjoyed a Star Trek series or movie, this book will appeal to you. If you’ve never been exposed to Star Trek, this is low cost way to sample it. Very little advance knowledge is needed, but you will miss out on how effectively the writing and art fits within the universe.

The first issue of STAR TREK: YEAR FIVE is available now for free (digitally) on IDW’s website.

Check back soon for my thoughts on issue 2 of this series.
