STAR TREK: YEAR FIVE #5 review – Are You Talkin’ to Me? (Houser, Califano, Thompson, Deer, Uyetake, IDW Publishing)

Thanks to IDW Publishing for the review copy!

IDW’s Star Trek: Year Five series chronicles the last year of the Enterprise’s five year mission (which was never filmed because the show was cancelled). The series has settled into a pattern of two issue stories, with an overarching arc involving a rescued Tholian child. This has two advantages in that it is easy to jump into the series and if there is a story you don’t like, it quickly moves to a new episode.

Issue 5 starts a new story in which the crew recovers some artifacts on an empty world full of ruins from a long gone civilization. The artifacts likely (it isn’t revealed yet) start to have some impact on the crew. Strange things are happening and the crew (and reader) are trying to figure out what is going on. In many ways, it feels like a throwback to the types of stories the original series told. If you watched the show, you can picture this issue playing out in an episode. While this story thus far lacks ‘everyone is about to die’ stakes, I’m certainly curious for the reveal of the cause of all the problems and how the crew resolves it.

Meanwhile, Uhura continues to work with the Tholian child to try to establish communication. I really like how the Uhura is depicted in this series. I think she is given more to do than many of the original episodes, where I seem to remember her most sitting at the chair on the bridge.

IDW’s Star Trek series continues to be a pleasant surprise. For new readers deciding where to start reading, any odd numbered issue thus far should start a new story that is resolved in two issues, making the series very accessible. While I may be missing it, I also don’t believe this story arc calls back to an original episode so less Star Trek knowledge is necessary for this issue.

STAR TREK: YEAR FIVE #5 is available now.

Check back soon for my thoughts on issue 6 of this series.
