Thanks to ComiXology for providing a copy of Stone Star #1 for review!

Just a few weeks ago Jim Zub & Max Dunbar announced a brand new graphic novel series called Stone Star. Thanks to the magic of digital book releases, they announced the book the same day it was released! I had a chance to talk to them about their creative process at WonderCon, and that interview will be available very soon. First, I want to share some of my thoughts on the first installment of this epic Science Fiction story.

SYNOPSIS:

The nomadic space station called Stone Star brings gladiatorial entertainment to ports across the galaxy. Inside this gargantuan vessel of tournaments and temptations, foragers and fighters struggle to survive.

A young thief named Dail discovers a dark secret in the depths of Stone Star and has to decide where his destiny lies – staying hidden in the shadows or standing tall in the searing spotlight of the arena. Either way, his life, and the cosmos itself, will never be the same!

A brand new space-fantasy saga takes flight on comiXology Originals from fan favorite creators Jim Zub (Avengers, Samurai Jack) and Max Dunbar (Champions, Dungeons & Dragons)!

Stone Star is an action-adventure spectacle bursting with colorful characters and pulse-pounding action! Grab your weapons, gritters, and join the fray!

Part of the comiXology Originals line of exclusive digital content only available on comiXology and Kindle. This title is available as part of comiXology Unlimited, Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading.

The concept of a traveling circus is familiar to many people, and in Stone Star Zub & Dunbar threw that idea out into space. The vessel they created takes gladiators around the galaxy to showcase their skills on different planets. It also give the inhabitants of those planets an opportunity to join the entertainment vessel. There is room for all kinds of people on the ship. It’s a full service operation so everything from battle ready fighters to janitors are required to keep the ship flying.

The main character, Dail, is a maintenance worker who discovers something special within himself. It’s not completely clear yet where his special skills came from, or how he will use them, but I can’t wait to find out!

The artwork, and page design of Stone Star is so cinematic. Dunbar captures movement so well on the page, and it was an absolute joy to get lost in his line work. The procession from one panel to the next is so natural. If you’re looking for a high action science fiction book with a lot of unique characters, you can’t go wrong with Stone Star.

I’m really looking forward to continuing this story, and also to see future ComiXology Originals. An increase in this kind of digital distribution could have such a huge impact on who can share their stories.

The first issue is now available via ComiXology.
