WELLINGTON review ‌-‌ ‌Take‌ ‌a‌ ‌Chance‌ ‌on‌ ‌Me‌ (Mahnke, Dawson, Kowalski, Simpson, Miesner, López) IDW Publishing

The Duke of Wellington is one of those historical names you’ve heard of, but might not remember exactly who he was. This makes him a perfect historical character to get the ‘he secretly fought supernatural evil’ comic treatment a la Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The first compliment I can give this series is that it made me want to learn more about the real Duke of Wellington, who apparently was a military commander best known for winning a battle against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.

The one drawback to this approach, along with the storytelling framing device, is knowing The Duke of Wellington survives. While the book manages to be suspenseful and even a bit scary, that little bit of tension is absent which would be particularly powerful given how likable a character the Duke is. He gives off an air of confidence and vulnerability that makes him quite believable.

The story, which would fit right in with a Mike Mignola tale, is fairly tight, though it serves more as a prequel to future events than a completely self contained story. While the plot ends up being somewhat telegraphed, it is nonetheless satisfying because the dialogue is so strong.

The art is largely responsible for the effective creepy vibe. Comparing it to the art of Hellboy and B.P.R.D. is not entirely fair, but some of the super natural elements are reminiscent of those series.

Wellington ends up playing like the first movie of a planned franchise. While it robs this volume of a bit of closure, it effectively made me want to read more.

WELLINGTON is now available.
