Here we are folks, the finale of my weekly reviews for What If…? At least until next season, but man what a way to end a first season. I did think that this was going to be a pretty cool episode based on what episode eight was leading up to, and for a surprising turn of events- this was a happy uplifting episode.
Like every episode, we get our point of divergence. Though not only in just one universe but in multiple, because The Watcher chooses to act to stop Ultron and gather his own team, “The Guardians of the Multiverse”. We get to see some of our top favorites come back, Captain Carter, T’Challa StarLord, Thanos killer Gamora, Party Thor, Dark Dr. Strange, Black Panther Killmonger, and end of the world Black Widow. This was an amazing team up for this cast of characters, I really want to know more about the Thanos killer Gamora and her universe (Tony Stark was alive in it for once!). As in all of Marvel, we got some good moments of chuckles from this team up and a few worried glances about certain teammates (Killomnger or Zola anyone?). The fight scenes and the gang plan were pretty great too, I was cheering quite a bit. Though I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to not watch something as much as when zombies were dumped into the mix (just no please).
I would have to say the best two team up were Nat and Peggy (who are pretty close and have nicknames for eachother in Peggy’s universe), they both work great with a shield and it was just so cool to watch! The second I would have to say would be Dr. Strange and The Watcher, although The Watcher pretty much stays out of the fight this time. He and Strange are thinking in the same way and I guess are friends now? I would also have to say that my favorite part of this season finale was when they all return home to their own universe and a few go on a new journey instead. I would also recommend for you all to keep watching a bit into the credits for an extra treat in Captain Carter’s universe, which I am dying to know more of! I would love for us to get a spin off for any of these other universes (just not the zombies, we can just close the book on that right now and never talk about it again).
Overall this was a very cool season one of What If…?, and I was pleasantly surprised by the directions the multiverses took (and I really want more of them too!). My hopes are raised pretty high for season two, though it will be sad to never hear Chadwick Boseman again in it. Speaking of voices, we got a good turn out of actors coming back to voice themselves. The list includes Chadwick Boseman, Samuel. L. Jackson, Hayley Atwell, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Michael B. Jordan, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Toby Jones, and Kurt Russell.
You can catch all of season one of What If…? On Disney Plus now!
