This year at San Diego Comic-Con International, we had a number of correspondents with ‘boots on the ground’, doing their best to take in as much of the sights and sounds of the show as possible, checking out a number of the panels and also interviewing some really cool and interesting creatives, dotted around the show.
One of these is our Comics Reviewer Samantha Maybe and she was lucky enough to catch up with writer Kieron Gillen at the BOOM! Studios booth, deep in the throng of the busy Convention Center exhibition floor. Kieron is just coming off the end of a couple of incredibly successful runs including STAR WARS for Marvel Comics and also Eisner Award-nominated THE WICKED + THE DIVINE for Image (the penultimate issue of which will be found in stores this Wednesday).

However, like a shark, the man would simply rot and die (no pun intended) if he wasn’t keeping busy, which has lead to the recently published DIE for Image Comics with artist Stephanie Hans, with its first trade volume hitting comic book stands to great acclaim, and the soon-to-be-borne ONCE AND FUTURE for BOOM! Studios with artist Dan Mora.
Kieron sits to talk to Samantha about what Arthurian myths and legends inform ONCE AND FUTURE, as well as how those myths and legends have evolved over the years to eventually wind up in his work. He also talks about his working collaborations with Dan, Stephanie and also his long-time creative partner Jamie McKelvie, who he has found himself DJing alongside at many an infamous party – the conversation does cover Kieron’s unofficial role as ‘Sexy Catalyst’, as well as the man who apparently can start a mass singalong of ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ on a whim…!
Thanks to Kieron for taking the time to talk to us, and also to Sam and BOOM! Studios for helping to set up the interview. Enjoy!!
