I’ve read countless stories about the end of the world, either preparing for it or dealing with the aftermath of a worldwide cataclysmic event. Apocalypse Cancelled is the first book I’ve read to pose the question – what if everyone prepared for an apocalypse, but it didn’t happen?
This original concept forms the basis for the volume’s collection of stories, poems, and a few comics. While the stories are unrelated, the thread that ties them together is the fact that people are given three weeks notice that an asteroid will destroy the planet. The characters react in different ways and when the asteroid misses earth (ooops! Way to go scientists!), they have to live with the consequences of what they did. Some of the stories are uplifting while others are quite dark. One of my favorite entries is a series of communications between Earth and the space station.
It should come as no surprise that some people do some crazy stuff when they figure the world is ending. As such, this book features plenty of extreme violence, drug use, sexual content, and as the back of the book promises “a sh*t ton of cats.” None of it feels gratuitous given the subject matter, but parental discretion is definitely advised.
Apocalypse Cancelled creates a novel situation and explores how people would react to it. Clocking in at 201 pages, the title has ample room to explore the world it created.
