In two weeks time, San Diego Comic-Con will be heading into the virtual space known as SDCC@HOME, held over the dates of what would have been the summer’s big Nerd Christmas (Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th July; Preview Night, Wednesday 22nd July) – and once again, we’ll hear the rumblings and complaints that Comic-Con isn’t about comics anymore.
Every year, the grumblings from industry insiders and creatives gets louder and louder as the headline-grabbing and attention-hogging multimedia companies attracts more and more social media chatter (and, if this was the actual convention, grabs precious exhibition floor space), complaining that Hollywood has stolen their con.
It’s a legitimate argument, as plenty of magazine ink gets spilled and pop culture sites devote more bandwidth to the flashy big and small screen attractions every year – but many forget that Hollywood has been a fixture of San Diego Comic-Con long before TWILIGHT rolled into town (with the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Katherine Hepburn being guests at some of the early SDCC events).
And you can’t say comics aren’t represented in the programming of Comic-Con with the average number of panels listed varying from 64% to 73% for the past five years, covering every aspects of comics, from creator spotlight panels to How To Draw sessions, from self-published efforts to announcements from the mainstream companies, from breaking a story to raising the profiles of marginalised voices, from fine-tuning that first pitch to the nuts and bolts of publishing. It’s a lot.
It’s also represented in the streamed video content we’ll be able to watch from SDCC@HOME. In-between the BILL AND TED FACE THE MUSIC panels and the Nathan Fillion Q&A’s, there’s a veritable raft of comics-based content comic your way in a fortnight’s time – here’s our breakdown of what you comics fans can enjoy…

Howard Cruse, widely recognized as the “godfather of queer comics,” passed away on November 28th, 2019. He left behind a remarkable legacy as the creator of Gay Comix, Wendel, and Stuck Rubber Baby (back in print from First Second Books in a 25th Anniversary Edition). Howard Cruse not only broke open doors with his prodigious talent, but he held them open for those who came after him. For over half a century, the relationship between Jack Kirby and Stan Lee that resulted in the creation of the Marvel Silver Age has been one of the most contentious issues in comics scholarship, with economic and legal consequences echoing down to the present day. In this panel, two recent biographers of Stan Lee–Danny Fingeroth (A Marvelous Life: The Amazing Story of Stan Lee) and Abraham Riesman (True Believer: The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee) join comics historian/writer Fred Van Lente (The Comic-Book History of Comics) and playwright Crystal Skillman (King Kirby) to explore pivotal moments in Lee and Kirby’s shared history and attempt to shed more light on the complicated dynamic that produced some of the greatest characters in comics–and some of the bitterest recriminations. Will Eisner’s The Spirit was seen weekly by five million newspaper readers in the 1940s and 50s and has been continually in print for the 80 years since. The Spirit was famous for its imaginative storytelling, film noir style, unforgettable characters, and stories. Since then, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Darwyn Cooke, and many others have tried to match Will Eisner’s creativity with their own versions of the The Spirit.
