Getting Ready for the Con Part 1 (Sakura-Con Edition)

Getting ready for another con, just a few months after Emerald City Comic Con is tough. With a full time job and wanting to make sure you have a better time at con, taking care of yourself and being fully prepared is a big thing. After ECCC, I noticed I fell back onto my bad habits I got from going to con for the first time. Not taking time to rest, not leaving to go get food or snacks, and not drinking enough water. This is a big no go for me and most other seasoned con goers. One of the first rules of con is listening to your body and taking care of yourself. Because this all means that you will have an even better time at con if you’re staying healthy and happy.

Now with the official countdown clock starting for Sakura-Con, the biggest anime convention in the Northwest, I feel like I’m trying to catch up to be ready in time. To me, Sakura-con is one of my absolute favorite cons to go to because it was the first con I ever went to and because of how much I love anime/manga. Sadly, I have not attended Sakura-con since 2017, with college taking most of my time I was unable to go (and then of course the global pandemic). You can bet that I’m feeling a bit nervous to be going back to the con that started it all, but I also have this overwhelming excitement for it at the same time. This year my best friend is finally going with me, and we are going the entire weekend. She also told me she was going to be doing her first anime cosplay.

This announcement set my mind racing. The first thought to break through the cheers in my head was, “Wait, didn’t I also say I wanted to get back into the cosplay game?”. Now for a little backstory, I used to cosplay a good amount when going to cons. Mainly, I have a good number of skilled cosplay makers who also made me an outfit to go with their group cosplay ideas (i.e. where my social media handle comes from). But, it all slowed down when I got into university and was overwhelmed with course work. At Emerald City Comic Con, I did a bit of light casual cosplay. The whole time I was thinking that for Sakura-con I wanted to make three new cosplay’s on my own for each day of the con, because I missed it so much. Flash forward to now, with one month and two weeks till the arrival of Sakura-con. I have decided to do a series of articles with tips and updates on how getting ready for con is going, along with my current progress on my (first time making on my own) three cosplays. For my cosplay line up I have picked to do female versions of the following characters, Tengen Uzui from Demon Slayer, Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen, and finally Katsuki Bakugo from My Hero Academia.

If you’re interested in checking Sakura-Con out, it’s taking place April 15-17 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, check out their website (http://sakuracon.org/) to see what amazing guests will be attending (along with all the other information) and to buy passes for the event!
