David Barnett (Author) • Philip Bond (Artist, Cover Artist) • Eva de la Cruz (Colorist) • Jane Heir (Letterer) • Megan Brown (Assistant Editor) • Shelly Bond (Editor)

Thanks to IDW Publishing for providing a review copy! Catch up on Eve Stranger with my review of #1.

Synopsis: Eve Stranger can do anything thanks to the nanotech that she has to inject every week to stay alive… anything except remember who she is or where she’s been. Her talents sold by the shadowy E.V.E. Project to the highest bidder, Eve’s latest mission finds her on the run in Pamplona, Spain. High-octane adventure, weird science, and doomed romance meet the jet-set in “Retrograde”!

Review

Issue #2 of Eve Stranger packs a powerful purple-haired punch! The vibe of the series becomes clearer as Eve gets more tasks and has more interactions with people from the E.V.E project. Many times the second book in a series feels slow, or overall less impactful than the first but that was not the case here. I enjoyed every action-packed moment once again.

The best thing about this issue is getting to know Eve herself better. Though she is somewhat hesitant and closed off with people, she is very extroverted. She’s a confident person, she’s very brave, she just has to live with a life-threatening illness with no cure. Her story is so layered and complex. Even though she clearly enjoys having fun, there is a dark side to her past and the nature of her relationship with project E.V.E. It makes for a super compelling and engaging story. In some ways, she is reminiscent of Marceline the Vampire Queen from Adventure Time. She has those sad moments in her past but thrives on enjoying the present.

The zany nature of the story is encouraged by Eve’s tasks in this installment. No spoilers here, but let’s just say that she isn’t always running about committing assassinations. Occasionally her clients care more about seeking thrills than kills.

Eve Stranger is an action series with a lot of heart. I am so excited for Eve to learn more about the E.V.E. Project and to potentially work toward her freedom from their manipulation.
