RESIDENT ALIEN episode 8 “End of the World as We Know It” – Cliffhanger

In the shocking final scene of the prior episode, stranded alien masquerading as human Harry finally found his device (which he plans to use to wipe out humanity), only to have a giant fissure in the ice swallow him, D’Arcy and Asta.

While Alan Tudyk has been the strongest part of every episode thus far, he’s largely sidelined here courtesy of said ice fissure. Instead, we get a surprisingly sweet look at D’Arcy. She’s referenced her semi-tragic past as an Olympic skier before, but we get a more personal look courtesy of some flashbacks. These flashbacks really flesh out her character, explaining her present state. D’Arcy has been one of my favorite quirky townspeople because she’s given some of the best laugh lines. This episode gives her some heart as well.

With Harry largely out of the story, we also get a fun (if unnecessary) rivalry between the Sheriff and Mayor, which serves as the catalyst for looking at the mayor’s marriage and the Sheriff’s relationship with ex-Deputy Liv. While RESIDENT ALIEN is usually about the … resident alien, this episode shows that the supporting cast is strong enough to carry a show. The likeability of the characters elevates what could otherwise be filler into a worthwhile part of the episode.

One element of the show that I haven’t written about yet is the music. RESIDENT ALIEN routinely picks the perfect song for the moment. In many ways, the soundtrack feels like a supporting character – amplifying the mood. In addition to supporting the scene, the songs are often just awesome. My wife watches with her song recognition app tagging the songs she likes.

Final random note. I have a theory about the female half of the military alien hunting duo. At the risk of avoiding any spoilers for this episode, I can’t share it yet. But if I am right, my wife can vouch for me when I brag to you all that I nailed it.

RESIDENT ALIEN deserves kudos for moving the story along quickly instead of stretching things out to extend the series. This episode features some big reveals and sets things up nicely for the next episode.

The eighth episode of RESIDENT ALIEN premieres today. Check back next week for my thoughts on the next episode of the series.

  1. is your theory that she too is an alien? my husband (a lawyer as well) had this theory. her urgency and harshness separate her from the rest of her team and even the general.
I love the show. I am especially enamored by the fact that we have so far received very little explanation as to why he has to kill everyone but we are as a species so aware of our wrongdoings that we can sort of figure it out on our own :-).
I have Asperger and find it fun but also very unrealistic that he has many of the same issues as someone who has Aspergers.
