At this point I think it’s unrealistic to hope that Marvel might give us one more happy story in this season of What If…? I mean I would personally like to meet the person that shoots down any and every alternate universe where Tony Stark gets a happy ending (or any of our heroes that have been done wrong) and have a word with them. Other than not being completely destroyed by this latest installment of the series, the episode had some killer quotes that will cause you to tear up a bit and smile.
Our moment of variance takes place in the opening scene of Iron Man when Tony is getting shot at before being caught in an explosion, events of which cause him to change and become Iron Man. But instead of that happening, Erik Killmonger shows up to save the day and become buddies with Tony… To say the least I never thought about this possibility is an understatement, but just the slight changes to this universe which basically mesh a lot of the first Iron Man movie and Black Panther together blows my mind. But I think we all loved getting to see more of Killmonger, and of course had some hopes of him being the hero for once in this universe. But besides the fact that there will be endless memes of Killmonger after this episode (I’m already seeing them and am dying), we got some wonderful words from The Watcher. The first one that hit home about Iron Man, “Heroes are not born, they are forged in darkness, shaped in battle, defined by sacrifice”. This really reminds us what it really means to what causes us to get our heroes in the first place, and how they leave an essential gap if not there.
The biggest understatement of this episode is the women, from Pepper Potts, to Shuri and let’s never forget Queen Ramonda (T’Challa and Shuri’s mother). Killing it each time they are on screen, and still knowing better than their male counterparts. Each has their own major parts to play in this alternate universe and it seems we might get to see how it plays out, if rumors have it right. Even The Watcher had some words to narrate what is to come because of these strong women with, “Heroes are never really gone, they live forever. As do the ones they inspire to carry on the fight”.
We once again get to hear our beloved king, Chadwick Boseman and his wise words in this episode. Along with many others reprising their roles, but sadly not everyone could do their own voices, Tony, Pepper, Obadiah, and Shuri to name the ones we missed. With only three episodes left and having absolutely no clue of what’s in store for us coming up, we can only re-watch and look forward to next Wednesday on Disney+ to see what’s next!
What If…? is only available on Disney+ with new episodes premiering every Wednesday!
