In the wake of the 2020 Coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic – a health crisis that left social and economic disruption in its path, along with the cancellation of many mass gatherings and comic conventions – on April 22nd 2020, it was decided by Comic-Con International to postpone San Diego Comic-Con as a physical event and, on May 9th 2020, announced that the convention would now be a ‘virtual con’: SDCC@HOME (#ComicConAtHome)
Groups and organisers who had applied for panels at the physical event were approached to submit video content, either in the form of edited content, recorded video conference calls or a combination of the two, to be scheduled for streaming on the CCI YouTube channel, free and available to all, over the week that would have made up the convention (Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th July; Preview Night, Wednesday 22nd July 2020).
These presentations will be made live throughout the course of the scheduled Comic-Con, as though they would be presented in the physical space. As with previous years, the schedules for these presentations were announced two weeks prior to the dates; Thursday 9th for Thursday 23rd, Friday 10th for Friday 24th, etc.
While not being able to fully represent the full volume of content that San Diego Comic-Con is able to provide year-in-year-out, the schedule does reflect the range of programming the event showcases, from gaming and science, from comics to literature, from films and television to streaming platforms.
