VERITY movie review: An unserious, melodramatic movie full of beautiful people making terrible decisions

Director: Michael Showalter
Starring: Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Córdova, and Brady Wagner
Movie Length: 1 hour 57 minutes

What it’s about: Based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel a struggling writer (Johnson) moves into a remote woodland estate to ghostwrite the remaining books for a famous, incapacitated author (Hathaway) who is paralyzed and catatonic after an accident. While there, she uncovers a secret, chilling autobiographical manuscript detailing dark family confessions and grows close to the author’s husband (Hartnett).

What Leo thought: Verity was one of those rare movies that ends well and you want to see a sequel. I feel like that’s how a movie should be done, I really don’t like when movies end on a cliffhanger and then never get a sequel. And since the book that this movie is based on also didn’t get a sequel, I feel like it’s unlikely that this movie will get a sequel, but I would be pleasantly surprised if it did.

The movie definitely has its ups and downs and some eye rolls, I felt like it kept people in their seats, because you never knew what’s going to happen next. It had surprises left and right and just when you thought the surprises are over, it hits you with one more.

Now going into this movie seeing the cast you should already know what you’re going into, the actors play the same roles they pretty much play in every movie, Dakota Johnson plays this down on her luck ready to do anybody for money person, Josh Hartnett plays this charismatic bachelor that you don’t know what he’s up to or what his intentions are, and Anne Hathaway plays this smug arrogant defenseless mother. So if you go into this expecting an elite, Oscar-worthy psychological thriller, you are going to be disappointed, but if you grab a group of friends, buy a giant tub of popcorn, and go in expecting an unserious, melodramatic movie full of beautiful people making terrible decisions, you’ll probably have a great time.

Leo’s rating: I feel like the timing of the release of the movie is off with what’s going on nowadays in the media, but ultimately I thought the movie was well done. I give it a B+ for betrayal.

Verity is currently in theatres.
