The word on the grapevine has been that DC Comics has declined to participate in Comic-Con International’s Comic-Con@Home event because they had something of their own in the works – today, that has now become official, details have been unveiled and we now have our first look at the latest virtual convention out of the gate in 2020: DC FanDome.
The coronavirus pandemic has made hosting conventions a practical impossibility but entertainments have to get the word out somehow. What DC has planning with this latest endeavour is one of the biggest and far-reaching efforts we’ve seen to date, taking on-board all aspects of the brand, from comics to animation, films to gaming, from adult content to dedicated gear for the kiddie-winks.
Going live on Saturday 22nd August, DC FanDome will open The Hall Of Heroes which will be the central hub of the event, spinning off into five satellite sub-sites: YouVerse, WatchVerse, KidsVerse – you can see how this is going, I suspect… – InsiderVerse and FunVerse.
There’s no word yet on how this will all operate, shy of a bunch of website links and content players – either a coder is currently typing his/her/their little fingers off, or someone is really getting messy in a VR modelling suite. We’ve yet to have a proper Virtual Reality comic con end, of anyone’s got the money, time and resources to pull something like that off, it’s AT&T, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. But, yeah, we’re more expecting a lot of URL clicking in our foreseeable future.
But who knows, right? We could be seeing the start of something truly magnificent in the world on online comic cons – we’ll know more as we get closer to the date. In the meantime, bookmark the official homepage for DC FanDome and we’ll post more when we learn more, as always…
