AIN’T NO GRAVE #1 review – A solid first issue! (Young, Corona, Beaulieu, Piekos) Image Comics

Writer: Skottie Young
Artist: Jorge Corona
Colorist: Jean-Francois Beaulieu
Letterer/Designer/Logo Designer: Nate Piekos
Editor: Marla Eizik

Thanks to Image Comics for the review copy!

An unearthly western tale of epic proportions brought to you by the superstar creative team of Skottie Young and Jorge Corona (Middlewest, The Me You Love in The Dark). Ryder’s given up her gunslinging past but when she’s threatened with something that could pry her from her family she’s forced to pick back up an old trade. When your will to live is greater than death itself nothing can hold you down!

Wow! Another creative team that just does a stellar job with combining their narrative and art to tell a story that is almost interactive with all its details and parts. There are not many better tandems that can drop you in the middle of a story like this and have you be completely engaged from the very first page until the last. While the first issue doesn’t appear to cover a lot of ground, even being double sized, it does set the tone rather quickly and introduces us to the main character and plot that lies within. There is only so much you can do in the introductory issue and it’s a balancing act to set the hook, line, and sinker without losing the reader with too many details or too much backstory. In that regard it’s a solid first issue! The illustrations are gorgeous as well. It’s just so beautifully drawn. Each detail, line and panel perfectly captures the story behind the words on the page. I’ll be curious to see where this book goes next and how our protagonist fares in the end. If you’re a fan of Skottie and Jorge this is yet another adventure that’s not to be missed.

My rating 8/10 – Great!
