Thanks to Ahoy Comics for the review copy and of course for being right down the street from a fellow WNY’er!
From the creative team of Crossed and esteemed Indie publisher Ahoy comes a tale of weak swords and poor sorcery far more outrageous then the current offerings on the shelf. Enter Babs, a bitter female barbarian with a bit of a mean streak and sharp tongue. Her armor is uncomfortable, her magic sword talks back, and all she wants is enough gold to enjoy some measly mead and grub if the slimy clientele at the local pub would leave her to it.
Ennis is back with another banger! Mixing a bit of adult themes and fantasy with biting social commentary and a male chauvinist…orc? You heard it! Only Ennis could create a filthy slime bag orc by the name of Mork, who also happens to have on his person a potion for making his dick bigger! It’s uproarious and hilarious. It’s so much more than that though if you’re paying any attention. It’s also a biting social commentary on society, the internet, and first world problems in general. The art team knocks it out of the park as well. It’s beautifully illustrated with a lush landscape, good character expressions, action, plump dragons, and some super slimy puke scenes. Alliteration unintended! Overall, it’s a great foundation for what seems like will be a lot of fun as we move forward. If you are into fantasy type stories with badass somewhat feminine barbarians and half wit orcs, dragons and leprechauns, and love a good satire, you’d be hard pressed to find something as funny and action packed as Babs! Plus I’ll say it again. Garth Freaking Ennis!! He can really do no wrong…..
P.S. Did I mention she has a pretty sarcastic talking magical sword? Adding yet another element of frustration and woe to Babs life and a bit of extra humor for us!
P.S.S. There is even a preview of the new Ahoy book, The Toxic Avenger, in the back of this issue! You’re going to want to check that out as well because it’s bringing the original weirdness and gory goodness of the original Troma joint in spades! Coming soon to a comic store near you….
My rating 8/10 Great!
