Out this week is Hammerfist #1, the new creator owned series from Rick Remender and Steve Epting published by Image Comics. Remender is best known for books such as Black Science, Deadly Class, Fear Agent, Tokyo Ghost, and Seven to Eternity as well as major Marvel work including Venom, Captain America, and Uncanny X-Force. Epting is a veteran artist most known for his work for Marvel on Captain America. Matt Hollingsworth and Rus Wooton round out the creative team as colorist and letterer respectively.
Hammerfist combines hard-boiled crime and supernatural horror and has been described as Reservoir Dogs meets Evil Dead. Issue #1 starts with a relatively grounded crime/noir atmosphere and moves towards a supernatural horror feel. The writing is superb and its very well-illustrated. We meet Mike Denton, a gun for hire, drug addict, and absentee father. He reluctantly joins a crew on a bank heist, which is out of his comfort zone, but he is promised a big score. This robbery doesn’t exactly go as planned and Denton acquires something supernatural that we are told chose him. It’s clear that his life is never going to be the same.
The available covers for issue 1 include open order cover A by series artist Epting and variants by Jerome Opeña, Nick Klein, Dan Panosian, and Andrew Robinson. Retailer incentives include a 1:50 by Daniel Acuña and a 1:100 top-tier variant foil using Robinson’s cover art.
My rating of the issue is 9/10.
