From part of the team that brought you Infinite Dark (writer Ryan Cady and artist Andrea Mutti) comes a new supernatural offering waiting to chill you to the bone! When an eccentric billionaire and paranormal hobbyist selects a group of specifically skilled personnel to research the most haunted place on earth they discover they may be in for more than they bargained for.
This was a really fun start to what is hopefully a great new horror series. I was a huge fan of Bunny Mask which Mutti worked on, and this seems to share that same creepy aesthetic and vibe. Cady’s dialogue is sharp and taut. He draws you in with layered imagery that is woven together with the fine pencils of Mutti. Each panel with its charred and smoky colors looks fantastic. It’s a mostly black and white background with subtle streaks of blue and vivid yellows that make the pages and panels pop. It’s a color palate that really works well with the paranormal tone. This issue generally sets up the cast and foundation of what is to come next but it mixes in some supernatural elements as well.
Some unexpected things happen during their flight to the haunted island and even in some foreshadowing early in the book there are some creepy images. It’s clear that the billionaire leading this expedition may not be letting on to everything he knows. It actually reminds me a bit of the movie 13 Ghosts with a little Island of Dr. Morneau mixed in. That had me excited early on. I’m anxious to see what kind of horrors awaits us once our team gets into the house on the island but I fully expect this one to set its hooks and go full batshit crazy at any moment! If that sounds like fun this is a comic you won’t want to miss!
