Hawkeye S1 E5 ‘Ronin’ review – Thank god for Yelena and her mac & cheese (Minor spoilers)

I feel like every Wednesday when I sit down to watch this show, I’m just saying “please make me feel something other than irritation for this show”. My god, this week it finally worked. I could cry in thankfulness to Yelena being such an amazing, strong and complex character (and funny!).

In this week’s episode, we actually get a good plotline for the series. Could be five episodes too late… But, we shall see how it works out. We finally get to Yelena’s story on what happened to her during the blip, and how she feels about everything. It also gives us new things to think about the Avenger name and what it means, along with finding out who “the big guy” is (an exciting surprise guest!).

My thoughts are all about Yelena this time around, because she absolutely steals the show since her appearance at the end of episode four (and kills it in this newest episode). Also, we get some insight into how she has been doing and what her current plan is (although, no new information on “the purple woman” or whatever her name is). Yelena also hits us all with a sucker punch about the Avenger’s name and what it means. Does it keep them heroes when they kill those they deem bad or evil (or the right?)? Why is collateral damage acceptable? And why is Nat, Yelena’s big sister considered collateral damage, when she was killed and ultimately is the reason their reality (or universe) was saved? Very hard hitting truths and questions, all of which I want talked about and I need a Clint and Yelena sit down talk.

Every episode Clint gives us a few more crumbs into his feelings and personality, and I am here for every little bit of them. This week we get him talking with Nat and visiting the site dedicated to the first place that The Avengers ever assembled (not sure if it was Stark Tower, or in front of the station where they all met up with The Hulk). It’s sweet, but I think we all know he needs to talk about everything with Yelena and have her meet his kids that Nat loved.

Kate Bishop is slowly getting better, this episode is probably her best yet. Only because it’s not all about her and you actually see her grown up after her late night mac & cheese night with Yelena (confused and intrigued? You gotta watch it!). Other than that, I am very excited for the new outfits that are waiting for Clint and Kate to show off for us all to see (I’m hoping so hard that they look good and pay homage to the comics the show is based loosely off of).

Fingers crossed for the finale episode next week, because at this point I’m gonna need a full length movie for Hawkeye to finish out his long way around plotline. At the moment it does not feel one bit like the show will be able to wrap up everything it needs to (without another season or movie for Hawkeye) in the short hour episode six will have. If you want to catch up on all five episodes of Hawkeye before the sixth and final episode this coming up Wednesday, you can stream all of Hawkeye on Disney Plus!
