MARVEL ACTION: CAPTAIN MARVEL #2 REVIEW – A Claw-some Series Continues (MAGGS, BOO, PEER, MIESNER, IDW / MARVEL)

Sam Maggs (Author) Sweeney Boo (Artist, Cover Artist) Brittany Peer (Colorist) Christa Miesner (Letterer, Designer)

Thanks to IDW Publishing for the review copy!

When we last left our hero, Captain Marvel’s herd of cats problem was revealed to be much worse, as the cats were actually Flerkens.  Flerkens look like cute cuddly cats, but are actually the universe’s most dangerous creatures. Flerkens can shoot tentacles out of their mouths and have pocket dimensions inside their mouths.  If you’ve seen the Captain Marvel movie, think Goose…but in this comic, the character’s name is Chewie. If you haven’t read issue 1 and are unfamiliar with the Marvel Universe, it may also help to know that Jessica Drew is Spider-Woman.

Being the second issue in the arc, I recommend reading issue 1 before digging into this one. While issue 1 established a herd of cute cats harassing New York City as the opposing force, this issue ups the ante by having them pose a threat to the universe … and giving them cute outfits.  Issue 2 also provides a much needed explanation about the bigger picture surrounding what is going on and how it relates to the larger Marvel universe. Finally, the end of the issue teases the addition of some popular Marvel characters.

For much of the issue, Captain Marvel doesn’t have anyone to talk to, so the bulk of Sam Maggs’ writing centers around her internal monologue, which continues to be witty.  When Captain Marvel does interact with ‘a bad guy’ the conversation was quite funny. As was the case in the first issue, the stakes revealed are real, but the matter is handled in a way that won’t scare young readers. The art is vibrant and colorful and I liked how the antagonist Flerkens aren’t just treated as “bad guys” the hero needs to beat up.  This is why I continue to recommend this book as one that parents can enjoy with their children.

Check back tomorrow for my thoughts on the third issue in this series!
