MARVEL ACTION: CAPTAIN MARVEL #4 REVIEW – Captain Marvel Slides to the Passenger Seat (MAGGS, BOO, PEER, MIESNER, IDW / MARVEL)

Sam Maggs (Author) Sweeney Boo (Artist, Cover Artist) Brittany Peer (Colorist) Christa Miesner (Letterer, Designer)

Thanks to IDW Publishing for the review copy!

Did you miss Captain Marvel’s battle against the Flerken invasion? No problem!  Issue 4 starts a new arc, making it a good drop in point for the series. There is literally nothing in this issue that requires reading the first three.

This issue, titled Bug Out, features a character that was recently added to the Marvel universe – The Unstoppable Wasp.  Nadia Van Dyne is the teenaged secret daughter of Ant-Man (It’s kind of a long story). She’s a science genius and recently got free of the Russians who were training her to be a super-spy in The Red Room (The program that trained Black Widow).  She had her own series for a while, which I enjoyed very much. This issue brings Captain Marvel firmly into the world created in that book, with cameos from the members of G.I.R.L. (Genius in Action Research Labs). In fact, it’s fair to say that the issue is focused more on Nadia than Captain Marvel.  If you have never heard of the Unstoppable Wasp, this issue is a very good introduction to the character.

While the conflict is decidedly small scale (read the comic, then come back and appreciate what I did there), it ends on a cliffhanger in which the stakes are real. Not a lot happens, but this isn’t a book you read because you absolutely have to know what happens.  You read this book for the character interaction along the way. With that said, I am interested in reading what happens next!

Like the Unstoppable Wasp and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series, Captain Marvel continues to be a comic younger audiences can enjoy, as it lacks extreme violence or death.  What makes it cool is it has enough wit for adults, making it a great series to read with your family. If that isn’t enough, there is a pretty amazing hidden reference to Jurassic Park.
