MY LITTLE PONY/TRANSFORMERS #1 review – Friendship in Disguise (Asmus, Fleecs, Perry, Wood, Flynn, Lawrence, Delgado, Uyetake) IDW Publishing

“Transformation Is Magic”

“Shine Like a Diamond”

Thanks to IDW Publishing for the review copy!

I’ve enjoyed IDWs TRANSFORMERS series’ immensely. When they made a crossover between the Transformers and the Terminator, I was all in. So naturally, the next logical movie is a crossover with … My Little Pony? I’d pay decent money to read the transcript of how that pitch went, as this must be the most unlikely crossover in comic history. So, is it any good?

While my Transformers knowledge base is pretty high, I must admit that my experience with My Little Pony amounts to knowing that they are toy ponies … who are little? There is a show called Friendship is Magic, explaining the clever book title. Luckily for me, the book provides a helpful “roll call” of both the Ponies and Transformers in this issue. I can mark “Twilight Sparkle” off of my list of character names appearing in a book I’ve read.

So apparently the ponies live in a place called Equestria, which is where our tale (no pun intended) takes place. The very first panel has a nice winking nod to crossovers, which made me feel better about the enterprise. After that, some stuff happens and voila – we have Transformers! Just when I thought there was literally no connection between the Transformers and My Little Ponies, the book helpfully provides a theory. While it isn’t as tight as the Terminator/Transformers link, it made enough sense to shrug and keep reading.

I can’t tell you if the Ponies are depicted true to form, but the book does a pretty good job with the Transformers. The generation-one styled Transformers in the issue are easy to recognize and include many of the fan favorites. The art style is a little more cartoony than other iterations of the Transformers, which helps them fit in the brightly colored world of the ponies.

If the idea of a My Little Pony/Transformers Smash-up sounds brilliant to you, this book delivers. If it seems like the most bizarre thing ever conceived, it probably bears a read just to prove they actually did it. From a personal perspective, I could see this book being a great way to introduce someone who likes My Little Pony to the Transformers I loved as a kid.  Some mild violence aside (it does have Transformers in it!) this is a family friendly title. I’m in for at least one more issue, because one of my all-time favorite Transformers is teased for the number 2.

MY LITTLE PONY/TRANSFORMERS #1 is now available.
