NIGHT OF THE SLASHERS #1 review (Scott, Fry, Lee, Curnow) Magma Comix

Writer: Cavan Scott
Artist: Paul Fry
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Editor: Bobby Curnow

Thanks to Magma Comix for the review copy!

A brand new horror thriller from newcomer Magma Comix that’s an homage to slasher films and a welcomed treat as Halloween quickly approaches. Once a year the town of Hill Creek’s residents transform into bloodthirsty monsters and murderers. This year a bus of helpless kids have unwittingly arrived in town just in time for the massacre that’s about to be unleashed! Will anyone survive the night?

We’re off to a bloody great start folks! Pun intended! Scott does a great job setting the scene and introducing us to the main players in this opening issue and everything plot wise is established pretty quickly. He doesn’t waste any time getting to the meat and potatoes of this horror story and there is a pretty gnarly kill scene in the form of a flashback right off the bat. That set the tone pretty quickly as we moved to the present day and I knew immediately this was going to be good! We open as a bus of kids is detoured through the little town of Hill Creek. Scott plays off some of the typical horror tropes with great amusement and effect and it doesn’t take long to realize the townspeople are a little off and these kids are likely all going to die. Well most everyone, right? Someone usually survives to tell the story, haha!  The story continues as we learn more about the town and kids from the bus as they hunker down for the night. What unfolds from there kicks off a wild night of horror beyond anyone’s imagination. The art is great and the whole issue just works on so many levels. I’ve only read the first issue and I’m already hoping there is a sequel in sight!

Overall, Night of the Slashers is the perfect treat for waking up the Halloween feels as we head into October and the early morning chill starts to creep into our bodies. As I started reading the first issue it almost immediately invoked memories of many of my favorite classic horror movies growing up. Jeepers Creepers 2, The Purge, Salem’s Lot and especially the newer series, From. It’s a fun throwback to the old school slashers we grew to love but with a few unique twists of its own. If you are a horror fan like me I highly recommend grabbing this one! You won’t be disappointed!

My rating 9/10 – Awesome!
