PROJECT RIESE #1 review – Throwback Adventure (Thompson, McComsey, Little, Birch) Mad Cave Studios

Writer: Zac Thompson
Artist: Jeff McComsey
Colorist: Paul Little
Letterer: Justin Birch

Thanks to Mad Cave Studios for the review copy!

Nazi’s are an oft used villain, and Project Riese taps into a long line of stories that features Nazi science/occult conspiracies (Indiana Jones, Hellboy, Rocketeer). Set in 1952, a group of rakish treasure hunters search leads them to an old Nazi site. This issue feels like a throwback treasure hunting story, but as things go on, surprises are revealed. As is often the case with a new comic series that features a group of main characters, characterization has been largely set aside in favor of setting up the story in the first issue. It will be interesting to see how the characters are fleshed out in future issues.

Project Riese’s art feels like the Borderlands video game, with bright colors and dark lines. The pictures really pop off the page. The sound effect text (BLAM, KRAKA-THOOM) lettering from veteran letterer Justin Birch also deserves praise, as it really helps you picture the sound as you read.

If you like Indiana Jones, you will definitely want to check out Project Riese. Fans of Hellboy should also consider it, though so far it has way fewer supernatural elements than one would find in a Hellboy story.

Project Riese#1 is set for release on August 2nd.
