RESIDENT ALIEN episode 4 ‘Birds of a Feather’ review – Love and Basketball

If you’ve enjoyed the first three episodes of RESIDENT ALIEN, a series about an alien stranded on Earth, the odds are good you will like the fourth. If you enjoy the show’s special effects, there is a great sequence to open the episode. If you enjoy Alan Tudyk’s physical performance as an alien trying to be human, this episode has him trying to play basketball. If the quirky townsfolk resonate with you, this episode gives many of them an opportunity to shine. In particular, Alice Wetterlund (D’Arcy) and Corey Reynolds (Sheriff Thompson) put in fine comedic efforts.

This episode moves most of the plotlines forward, aside from the mystery of who killed the original doctor. Max has enlisted the aid of a friend in his escalating feud with Harry. This story thread is responsible for some of the best parts of the episode. Both child actors put in likeable and believable performances and it is fun to see them play off the adults. I’m still not sure where the Asta teen pregnancy story is going, but there is a major development in this episode. It’s also nice to see some development with Deputy Liv. I can definitely see her story playing a major role in the bigger plot.

While it occupies the least screen time, perhaps the most important development revolves around the two mysterious people (if they are people) introduced in the last episode. As they move closer to the main story I can’t wait to learn more about them and see how they impact the series’ trajectory.

Episode four lacked some of the ‘will he get caught’ tension of the previous episode, but replaces it with more humor. A greater percentage of the jokes revolved around cursing and juvenile sexual humor, which suited me just fine, but could be cause for parental discretion if you haven’t been exercising it already. RESIDENT ALIEN has quickly become one of my favorite weekly shows (the other being SNOWPIERCER). If you haven’t seen it yet, I do recommend at least watching the first episode to get a proper introduction to the series.

Random thought: If someone wants to sign a petition to lobby for a Deputy Cletus spinoff, I’d be happy to sign it.

The fourth episode of RESIDENT ALIEN premieres today. Check back next week for my thoughts on the next episode of the series.
