SAVAGE SASQUANAUT #1 & 2 review (Hartman, Santos) – Savage Sasquanaut is the cryptid the galaxy never knew they needed

Wes Hartman – creator, writer, colorist, letterer, Gab Santos – artist/cover artist, Variant covers by Paolo Pantalena, Kelsey Shannon, Ace Continuado, Craig Babiar, Chahine Ladjouze, and Alessandro Micelli

Spaceships! Four armed aliens! A title character that resembles Ka D’Argo from Farscape!

I’m talking about SAVAGE SASQUANAUT, the brand new comic book series from Cosmic Roots Studios, written and penciled by Wes Hartman, with inks by Gab Santos, whose main protagonist is – you guessed it from the title – Bigfoot in a space suit.

The project, which began with and is still utilizing a crowdfunding campaign, will initially be comprised of six issues, with more issues to hopefully come thereafter.

The story follows a Sasquatch astronaut, or Sasquanaut, who leads a mutiny on an alien spacecraft with the assistance of several prisoners in an attempt to return to his home in the Appalachian Mountains on Earth. The mutiny proves to be a success, but Empress Dalia, ruler of the Aurellian Empire, is not impressed, mainly because the ship commandeered belongs to her.

The origin of the Sasquanaut arriving in this intergalactic predicament is ambiguous, but it’s eluded that NASA is somehow involved. The reader can only assume that in the near future woods and backwaters across the United States will be scoured for hairy, bipedal creatures to strap into rockets and send flying into the vast gulf of space.

SAVAGE SASQUANAUT feels like Farscape, Final Space, and Saga wrapped into one, albeit less NC-17 than Saga and more PG-13, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you’re a fan of all three. A fun, quirky sci-fi story with plenty of room to develop, great artwork from Santos and Hartman, and best of all, a four armed humanoid empress clothed in lace. What’s not to love?
