SCARENTHOOD #4 review – The end of ‘Book One’ but the beginning of something fantastic (Roche, O’Halloran, Lee, Daly, Mariotte) IDW Publishing

Thanks to IDW Publishing for the review copy!

The 4th issue of SCARENTHOOD wraps up the IDW miniseries. While the horror and mystery genre seems to be taking off, it is refreshing to read a well thought out story, that doesn’t require horror to develop suspense and uneasiness. The writing is fantastic, and the story and character development are on point. A strong connection with the characters is developed, and each character has their own unique personality, quirks, strengths and burdens.

SCARENTHOOD is a story about four parents brought together by a haunted school where all their children attend. The demon in the school had been contained long ago, but one of the parents accidentally broke the restraining talisman. Four parents in the small Irish village become ghost hunters trying to figure out what is causing the haunting. In between jaunts to unravel the mystery, the characters are confronted with parenting responsibilities, like making costumes for a school play.

I do not want to destroy the story, or how it ends, but lets says that there is a confrontation with the demon, and all of our characters are tested. There is a new ally found, and one lost. This has been a great, quirky, and entertaining read from beginning to end. I am seriously looking forward to further developments in the story line.

All 4 issues of the SCARENTHOOD mini series are now available.

Official synopsis courtesy of IDW:

The Big Boy has tipped ALL the toys out, and the Grown-Ups don’t know how to clean them up.

There are revelations about Flynno’s brother, the ‘Mother Of One’, and Father Sinnott; can they be connected? And it’s a race against time for Cormac to catch Scooper’s School Play–but stage-fright is the least of her problems….

Nick Roche (Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, Transformers Wreckers Saga) and Chris O’ Halloran (Ice Cream Man, Folklords) tidy away most of the mess in this final issue.
