The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a very interesting movie for multiple reasons, it’s a sequel to the 2020 Sonic movie and what’s unique about these movies is that both movies have Jim Carrey in the lead role as Robotnik the villain of the movie even though he has gone on record saying that he does not want to do sequels to his movies. The main reason how we got a sequel to Ace Ventura is because it was in his initial contract, which makes me think maybe the similar deal was here. Another unique thing about this movie is that Jim Carrey says that this will be his last movie. Whether that’s truth has yet to be seen.
This movie starts off from where the last movie ended. But what’s great about this movie is that you do not need to have watched the previous movie to understand this one. Similar to the first one this is a coming-of-age movie where the character learns what it truly means to be a hero.
The basic plot of the movie is somehow Robotnik has returned and wants revenge on Sonic and to take over the world, but this time with a new ally. The new ally reminds me a lot of Drax from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, he has the same naïve mindset where he takes everything at face value. But just like Drax it lets the audience laugh with the character, not at it.
Sonic also gets a new ally with mishaps to show for. This movie is great for fans of Sonic or if they just want to watch a fun movie with the whole family. Like with most movies there are loose ends but, if you can watch a movie and try not to think too much into a Sonic movie you will be entertained.
Now if you have watched the first movie and thoroughly enjoyed it and wondered if this is as good or better than the first, then I will say it’s on par, not better but also not worse. If you enjoyed the first movie you will have a good time with this one as well.
I give this movie and A for Acceleration.
