TETRIS movie review – A cold war era story about the best selling game of all time

Director: Jon S. Baird
Starring: Taron Egerton, Toby Jones, and Roger Allam
Movie Length: 1 hour 58 minutes
Tetris is a movie about the world beloved video game distributed by Apple TV+, and honestly I wish it was released in theaters not because I had to sign up for yet another streaming service, but because the movie is generally good and deserves a theatrical release. As an American Russian I was blown away how accurate the movie portrayed living in the Soviet Union and that whole era. I watched this movie with my parents who both were born and raised in the Soviet Union. They were shocked how accurately the movie depicted that whole time. They said they couldn't believe that this is actually an American movie and not a Russian movie.

The story begins with a software engineer/businessman trying to sell a game that he created but notices that all the attention even by his own staff is geared towards this new game called Tetris. After checking it out and playing the game for the first time he was hooked. Just like Ray Kroc with the McDonald's franchise he bet his whole life on trying to get involved with the game and everything that goes on with it, licensing and all.

Now this is based on a true story and like you would imagine a lot of things are probably exaggerated for either comedic value or to make the movie more interesting. Now I personally don’t mind because this movie was entertaining throughout to say the least, and even if you are not a fan of Tetris you will still have a great time with this movie.

One major thing that blew me away besides the fact of how accurately the movie depicted Russia in the Soviet Union era is the fact that they actually have a Russian version of the movie you can watch, you can watch it with Russian subtitles or in Russian language. As well as an abundant of other languages which is unheard of in any streaming service. Furthermore I have never seen Russian language being offered on any American streaming service. Now sure streaming services might have a Russian show here and there but to have an American movie be translated in real time to Russian is amazing in my personal opinion, which I wish was the norm.

Apple TV+ also has something I’ve never seen on any other streaming service, or maybe I just never noticed it. There is an audio description option for every language available, which actually describes every movement and every scene as if you were vision impaired. If I was vision impaired I would much appreciate the fact that I could hear vocal descriptions of what’s happening on the screen, so I didn’t have to guess what was happening. So I have to give a big kudos to Apple TV+ for that.

Overall Apple TV+ could have easily milked this story and made it into a series, but the fact that they could tell a compelling story and made it interesting while at the same time getting you invested in these characters is why I’m giving it Tetris an A+ for Asymmetrical.

If you still don’t have Apple TV+ you can get a 3-month free trial by getting any Apple product, or do what I did and you can actually just get that 3 month free trial from Best Buy directly no product purchase required. All you do is search for 3 months Apple TV+, add it to cart and check out, you will receive an email with a promo code to which you can then sign in with your Apple ID or create an account. Now since I never had Apple TV+ before I actually got their intro offer which gives you 7 days free and then the three month free trial kicks in, which is a bit strange if you ask me but hey the more free stuff the better is my philosophy.

If you made it this far I would like to thank you for reading my review I do appreciate it.
