THE DAMNED movie review – The perfect claustrophobic and paranoia filled head trip for the dark cold winter.

Director: Thordur Palsson
Starring
: Oddesa Young, Joe Cole, Lewis Gribben, Siobhan Finneran, Francis Magee, Rory McCann, Turlough Convery, and Micheal Og Lane
Movie Length: 1 hour 29 minutes

What it’s about: When another ship appears in trouble at sea a local ship captain decides that their own lives are more important than the vessel in trouble and the shortage of supplies it could cost their small village in the middle of the harsh winter.

What Corey thought: I really enjoyed The Damned. It is the perfect claustrophobic and paranoia filled head trip for the dark cold winter. That’s certainly what I’m stuck in right now but this film might have made me feel a little better about my own situation. First off, the cinematography is just gorgeous. The ice capped mountains and dark foggy seascape just make the village feel so small as they tower and crest in the background. It gives you a sense of dread, loneliness, and despair right from the get go. The acting is fantastic as well. The characters help breathe life into this horror drama with their authentic dialogue, song, dance, and fear of superstitions. This is the kind of film that relies more on your mind and the tricks it can play on you. If you’re looking for a gory, bloody slasher you came to the wrong place but there is still plenty of horror at play here. There are more than a few carefully placed jump-scares and some very creepy moments that will certainly get under your skin. It’s a slow burn of a film but it does burn and when you finally get to that anxious and tension filled ending you will probably be happy that your idea of winter, much like mine, is a lot easier to swallow than what we just witnessed here…….

Comparisons: The Witch, The Terror

Corey’s Rating: 4 out 5 excellent!

The Damned is now in theaters in the UK and Ireland.
