THE HUNTER’S ANTHOLOGY season 1 review – Subway Series

THE HUNTER’S ANTHOLOGY, available on Amazon Prime Video, opens with a treasure hunter/cowboy looking dude walking the streets of New York. He seems just enough out of place to make you want to know what he’s all about. Well, it turns out his name is Mac and he’s a demon hunter.

What follows is the kind of ‘people stuck in a confined space’ mystery that would make Agatha Christie proud … if she was into demon hunting. Mac and six other passengers are stuck in the car, and he has to figure out which one of them is a demon. THE HUNTER’S ANTHOLOGY establishes the ‘rules of the game’ early on, and the setup is essentially the framing device for the passenger’s backstories, with each comprising an episode in the anthology.

As with any anthology, some flashbacks land better than others. The second episode had the most legitimate scares (including a particularly nasty jump scare), while the final one was downright hilarious and by far my favorite. Each one is unique and creative, including one that had a fun deconstruction of the ‘genie wishes’ scenario. The characters are interesting in that they have to walk the tightrope between being likeable and possibly being the demon.

The series won’t wow you with its budget, but it is surprisingly enjoyable. For the most part, the acting is good despite the lack of big stars. The best compliment I can give is I intended to watch two of the episodes before bed and I ended up staying up to watch the whole thing. I’m paying for it a bit today, but it was worth it.

Based on the subject matter, I do recommend some parental discretion. Also, if you are a completist, there is a small end credits scene. If you are looking for something to watch on a streaming service, THE HUNTER’S ANTHOLOGY has enough twists, scares, and laughs to make it worth your while. The first episode is a bit slow, so I recommend at least making it through the second before giving up on it.

Season 1 of THE HUNTER’S ANTHOLOGY is now available on Amazon Prime Video.

  1. I agree the first episode was slow. I stopped watching but a few days later tried it again and it was addictive and we watched all episodes in one sitting. We enjoyed this “subway drama” and recommend it to all.
