Matt Ferguson is the co-founder of Rotherham-based print house Vice Press and, with his partner-in-crime James Henshaw, have established themselves as one of the world’s premier producers of high quality fully licensed artwork and screen-printed posters starting with primarily British and European properties from movies, television and comics such as 2000AD, and moving into mainstream film properties like the globe-straddling Marvel Studios films.
Matt’s work is starting to be recognised worldwide and a selection of his prints was showcased recently at a special Amblin Studio-themed exhibition in New York, hosted by the renowned Bottleneck Gallery. Hung were a selection of prints based around Amblin and Steven Spielberg movies, including JAWS, DUEL, E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL and the debut of a new design print for CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.
You may have picked up any one of Matt’s incredible prints when you’ve attended screenings of films like CAPTAIN MARVEL, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, DOCTOR STRANGE and even Lucasfilms‘ THE FORCE AWAKENS and STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – the work that he’s done on them is amazing and they really are something very special.
One of the most recent free print giveaways was a matching pair of AVENGERS: ENDGAME prints, available at screenings of the film at select Odeon Cinemas. These designs show our Marvel heroes in front of the Avengers Base, ahead of their attempts to take down the mad titan Thanos – bold stuff!
This past weekend, I was lucky enough to attend an Open House Day at Vice Press HQ in Rotherham where lucky fans were able to buy over-sized Matt Ferguson standard and limited edition prints and lithographs, as well as getting them signed by the man himself. The day was an incredible success and Matt and James are already planning ahead on doing the same again next year, in a manner that seems to be becoming the mantra for the company – bigger, better, bolder than before.
While there, I managed to pin Matt down for a couple of minutes to talk about Vice Press’ plans for the future and how they are enjoying the ever-expanding popularity of their work. It was great to get to ask Matt on his reaction to seeing yer actual Times Square video screen billboard, advertising the Bottleneck exhibition, in person!
