Anime NYC returned to the Javits Center this summer for another record worthy weekend, with favorable weather and a standout guest lineup cementing the conventions reputation as one of the fastest improving conventions on the East Coast.
New attendees and longtime Anime NYC goers notice a clear pattern: it gets better every year. The organizers have earned a reputation for taking attendee feedback seriously and implementing changes the following year. This year had smooth operations, well-informed staff, and, in a first for the convention, reliable mobile service throughout Javits resolving a longstanding complaint from prior years.
Helped by near perfect weather across most of the convention days, cosplay turnout was among the most impressive yet! Costumes spanned three decades of anime, from beloved 1990s classics to the latest popular shows. One standout was the Las Vegas Pikachu cosplayed by @sassielefay.
The Artist Alley offered a well curated mix of styles, with no two booths feeling alike. International representation was notably strong this year, with several artists traveling from Europe, some visiting the United States for the first time. Among the highlights for me was a French artist @Arkestar, whose style blends pop surrealism and dark noir.
Food options featured a solid variety of Japanese cuisine with manageable wait times though some attendees felt portion sizes didn’t always justify the prices, one of the few criticisms in an otherwise smooth weekend.
The guests of honor lineup were equally varied. My personal favorite was Junko Takeuchi, the legendary voice of Naruto Uzumaki, whose appearances were a highlight for fans across generations.
