Dallas Fan Expo 2024 preview

By Mike Newnam

In early June, the center of the Pop Culture universe will be in Dallas, Texas as Fan Expo descends upon the fair city for the second weekend of the month. Fan Expo, the Country’s largest comic convention organizer will bring its traveling geekdom to the Lone Star state and they are bringing out the big guns to satisfy even the toughest cowboy. No matter the fandom, Dallas Fan Expo can fulfill appetites with
representations from the largest properties – including but not limited to Doctor Who, Star Wars, Wolverine, Nightmare Before Christmas and multiple legendary Anime titles. Disney has a strong representation at this years’ gathering with celebrities, artists, and booths
promoting new titles. As is the norm with comic conventions, Star Wars will have many available activities in which to participate. The newest Disney+ Star Wars show debuts mere days before the convention and The Acolyte will have a booth promoting the new entry into a galaxy far far away. There will also be opportunities to meet Star Wars celebrities from different titles including Alan Tudyk (Rogue One), Ming-Na Wen & Temuera Morrison (Book of Boba Fett), Natasha Liu Bordizzo (Ahsoka), and Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian).

There will also be comic creators and independent artists including Frank Miller, Andy Kubert, Arthur Adams, Frank Cho, and many, many more. Fans of the hit British show Doctor Who are also in for a big treat in Dallas. One of the United States’ largest gatherings of Doctor Who celebrities, outside the annual Gallifrey One Convention in LA, will take place at Dallas Fan Expo. Fan favorite Doctor David Tennant will be in attendance along with Billie Piper. Also appearing will be the first female Doctor, Jodie Whitaker, reoccurring companion and legendary British Comedian Catherine Tate and non other than the Doctor’s wife and mother of Amy Pond – River Song as portrayed by the incomparable Alex Kingston. On Saturday, Whovians can relive their favorite adventures in the TARDIS with a panel on the main stage; Timeless Tales: A Journey Through the Doctor Who Universe. Truly plenty of fun and adventure for anyone no matter what fandom peaks one’s interest.

Fan Expo is holding a special 50th anniversary celebration for Wolverine with exclusive limited edition comic covers by legendary artist Bill Sienkiewicz and a panel with Frank Miller, Steve McNiven, and Andy Kubert. Nightmare before Christmas fans rejoice with voice actor Chris Sarandon and also composer/singer Danny Elfman for Jack Skellington will both be in attendance. There is also an Anime after Dark event on Saturday night which will include a live DJ, bar cart, cosplay contest, and chances to meet Voice actors from legendary anime titles such as Demon Slayer, One Piece, My Hero Academia and more. The after dark event is free to those with a Saturday or weekend badge.

Everything is said to be bigger in Texas and Dallas Fan Expo appears to be trying to live up to the famous state adage. The map reveals a beer garden and what looks to be the largest food court in comic convention history. They are also partnering with local eateries to offer discounts at multiple restaurants around the convention center with a valid badge from this years’ event. Food is something that often gets
overlooked at these gatherings and good offerings can make or break a long day of standing in line and walking on concrete. It seems our friends in Dallas recognize that and I for one greatly appreciate it and cannot wait till June 7th to experience all the nerdy goodness!
