A new one-shot from the wild mind of award winning superstar writer Mark Russell. Set some time in the future where your social media presence means life or death and the up or down clicks you get might actually cause your head to explode! A man wakes from a 20 year coma to a world he doesn’t recognize and struggles to find any semblance of the life he once had.
I loved this! Social media has certainly taken the world by storm for better or worse. It will be interesting to see how it shapes our future. As always Russell brings his trademark dark and comedic tones to this phenomenon and does so with great success. In many ways he’s become the less sleazy and less vulgar comic book version of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Of course I mean that as a very big compliment. Everything Russell writes is timely, poignant, full of social commentary, and absolutely hilarious. I can’t think of a better example currently in this medium. He’s always at the top of his game writing in this form and he continues to push the boundaries while exploring weighty themes that sometimes feel almost too real. That would be the case anyways, if you could help yourself from chuckling out loud at some silly reference or piece of clever dialogue that just takes all the seriousness out of the equation. It’s not really that far fetched to believe we might just see some of these ideas come true in the future. For now, let’s just hope and pray we don’t! haha!
Russell’s always a joy to read and I always look forward to seeing just what he’ll tackle next. Laci and Lesko make for a fine combination handling the art and colors as well. It’s detailed, colorful, and gleefully gory. Each panel, carefully laid out and easy to follow along with the dialogue. Overall this was a great read and while it’s perfectly conclusive and whole as a one shot I’d loved to get a little more in this world. It’s just a fascinating idea! If you are a Mark Russell fan or just like futuristic stories with a dark tone in general this is not one to miss! Check it out today!
