Day one of Kumoricon 2023 recap!

I’m finally back! It’s been a long and rough year, but I made it back to Kumoricon!!!!! Last convention of the year and we are already starting out strong, hot tubs, soju, and cosplay gold! I am having a blast so far and we are only one day down.

Let me start the story from the beginning, day zero was just my bestie Gabi and I driving for the three hours it takes to get to Portland Oregon to check in, get settled, and have some relaxing fun time. The trip was fun, music, and boba tea all the way. This was then followed up with meeting an online mutual friend, Jamie, better known as @shouganeko on Instagram. We met him, his lovely boyfriend, and another friend for a very big, very yummy, and most gloriously hot bowl of ramen. I don’t think our night zero could have been any better, but to top it all off. I had commissioned Jamie for a few cosplay wigs and they were ready for pickup that night! Absolutely stunning!!! We talked all night about future wigs, cosplays and conventions for 2024. Such a blast, and I was able to accomplish my first major goal of the weekend. Making sure Gabi got to swim in a hot tub.

I don’t think I’ve ever been in a pool or a hot tub for so long, and played around in them since I was little. Us playing around for hours in them on night zero was the best start to con ever, I don’t think I’ve ever seen my friend so happy.

Day one of Kumoricon found me cosplaying as Nanamin from the ever popular Jujutsu Kaisen series, and being blown away by all the inventive cosplays. Many cosplayers just had absolute fun with their cosplays this year, but last year was the same too. It’s always at anime conventions I see people let loose and just go nuts with being silly. Kumoricon is just that kind of convention, a place to feel right at home and goof off. It’s also a really kind space, I didn’t run into any mean cosplayers (only slightly cold ones, as I was also cold). Everyone is so welcoming and wanting to include people and lots of photo groups were meeting up (it’s so fun to watch a photoshoot, and see the behind the scenes of some great photos). Gabi and I ended up finding this amazing abandoned hallway, and we are planning to keep going back to it this weekend to do our filming and some photoshoots.

I also got the chance to sit down with The Cosplay Coven and have a nice long chat with them, coming soon to our Soundcloud (under Englishman in San Diego) if you want to go give it a listen. It was a lot of fun chatting with them, discussing cosplay, friendship, Kumoricon, and future goals, and cosplay. I can’t wait to catch up on their content online after con is over, I’m also planning to stop by their first ever booth this year and pick up some much needed merch from them.  The next few days will be filled with more interviews and activities held by the con, so no shortage of fun at all!

I only have two problems with Kumoricon this year so far, there’s too much I want to buy from all the great booths vending here (I need all the One Piece and Hell’s Paradise stuff please). But, my main problem is that the con is too short! I want more days to goof off and have fun with my friends in cosplay!

I hope to see some of you at the following two days of Kumoricon this weekend. Let’s take some photos together and grab boba (I found a booth that has some for the first time in my life at a convention!).
