Sakura-Con 2023 recap

It’s now been a few weeks since Sakura-Con 2023 weekend happened, and I feel like I have finally recovered (a little). This was probably one of the con’s I was the most tired going into and came out worse, even more so than getting sick during night zero of Kumoricon (though I had to take a week off work to get better). This time though, I was not at all prepared.

The convention itself was not tiring (ok that’s a lie, all the walking and adrenaline wearing off is what’s doing it to me), it was a lot of fun. I think working eight straight days in a row before con was not helpful, next time I definitely I need to look into taking more time off before a big con (like when I attend my first SDCC this summer…). No matter how many cons I go to, I can still find things to improve on and do better next time around.

I can’t believe how many highlights I have from this years Sakura-Con, The One Piece meet up, meeting online friends in person for the first time, making even more friends, recording videos for my podcast with my co-host, cosplaying my heart out, checking out new restaurants I never knew were so close by, and all the great merch I picked up at con!

I also got to see the famous Shrekura-Con shrine this year. I have heard so much about it since last year and had a hoot when I finally got to see it in person. You gotta love people at cons and the crazy stuff they come up with for fun.

I can not say enough how much I had fun cosplaying that weekend, even though my cosplay line-up did not go as planned at all. I was still really happy with how everything turned out, with my showing off my new Luffy from One Piece (in his Dressrosa shirt), my two newly bought cosplay for Nico Robin from One Piece (her time skip outfit and her current look in the Wano arc), and my big new cosplay Mirko from My Hero Academia (but Bakugou in her outfit with all his props in her colors too). Although, there is still a lot I want to do for this big new cosplay… I am really happy with how it looked and I can’t wait to make my version even better.

There were some moments I missed out on and have been kicking myself for, the big ones being missing out on the two concerts and cosplay contests this year. The contest this year was early one Saturday morning and I missed it because I was wanting to sleep a bit more. The reason I missed the concerts was because my group had other plans they wanted to do, or just couldn’t get the energy to go with me. There’s always next year, and I’m promising myself to not miss another concert at anymore cons (or at Sakura-Con 2024).

There are so many fond memories from this year for me, my prize from the One Piece sticker hunt (super cute), my One Piece trivia winnings (best hot chocolate bomb ever!), and all the amazing things I was able to get my hands on. This is the first time I have ever bought keychains at a con, because I normally have nowhere to place them (still true to this day). But, anything One Piece was bought (artwork mostly), and I picked up four new figures over the weekend. Yes, three are One Piece ones, but this is one Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure one (my first one besides Nendroids). My top highlight from the weekend is still the One Piece meet up. I have never seen so many One Piece fans in person before (I still feel like I’m the only one in my friend group. Which is true!). Again, I had a blast last weekend and can’t wait to do next year in a better, more improved way!
