Today at New York Comic Con indie comic publisher Scout Comics announced they were partnering up with Los Angeles based independent production company Mucho Mas Media to launch a new imprint of comic titles called Chispa Comics.
The Latinx brand will be headed by veteran comic creators David Bowles, Hector Rodriguez III, and Javier Chapa with the goal of finding “diverse creators and curate stories that are culturally relevant across various mediums of entertainment.”
The first title under the imprint is Attack at Acapulco: A Black Demon Tale and it is premiering at the show with a special ashcan edition. The title from writer Sebastian Martinez-Kadlecik (who wrote Eisner nominated Quince) and artist Bruno Oliveira (who has worked on Amazing Spider-Man, and Deadpool) is about the Mexican myth of the Black Demon (an ancient megalodon that lurks the seas) who guards nature for Tlaloc (the Aztec god of rain, earthly fertility, and water).
In addition to Attack at Acapulco: A Black Demon Tale they also announced 4 other titles that will be released in 2022, The Fantastic Flame written by Alex Segura (Star Wars—Poe Dameron: Free Fall) and Chantel Acevedo (The Distant Marvels) with art by Richard Ortiz (DC Bombshells, Southside Serpents), Thanks! -Romina by Giulie Speziani, Dial “F” for Foodie by Aaron Duran, Mashbone & Grifty by Oscar Garza and Pablo Esquivel, and horror anthology, Catrina’s Caravan.

EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE TITLE ATTACK AT ACAPULCO: A BLACK DEMON TALE AVAILABLE AT NEW YORK COMIC-CON
(Los Angeles, CA/New York, NY) FRIDAY OCT 8TH 2021 – SCOUT Comics, one of the fastest growing independent comic labels in the US, is partnering with the Los Angeles-based independent production company Mucho Mas Media to launch LatinX brand Chispa Comics. Their new imprint, helmed by veteran comics creators David Bowles (Clockwork Curandera), Hector Rodriguez III (El Peso Hero), and Javier Chapa (Blue Miracle), was created to explore within the global LatinX community and communities of color to find diverse creators and curate stories that are culturally relevant across various mediums of entertainment.

Their first release, ATTACK AT ACAPULCO: A BLACK DEMON TALE, puts readers in the middle of the busiest week of the season when things on the Pacific coast of Mexico are not as they seem.
