BENEATH THE TREES WHERE NOBODY SEES #1 review – Bold, jarring, and inventive (Horvath, Otsmane-Elhaou) IDW Publishing

Writer and Artist: Patrick Horvath
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Production and Design: Nathan Widick
Assistant Editor: Jake Williams
Editor: Maggie Howell

Thanks to IDW for the review copy!

Disguised as a fable or children’s book. It’s an imaginative and heartful leap into the every-day of a small town and its residents. Though, not everything is as peachy as it seems. Some of the residents are hiding some big secrets. Secrets that could reveal their true identities and change this small town forever!

Minor Spoilers ahead!

Wow! I didn’t see all that coming. I can’t think of a book recently that makes such a dark, deep, and twisted turn into the un-expected as this one and it’s fantastic! It’s truly jaw dropping how detailed and precise Horvath writes and narrates this book. It’s bold, jarring, and inventive. He takes a rather classic and innocent approach to start this tale and then plunges the reader into pure madness slowly peeling back the many layers of this story and our narrator/main character Samantha. Sam, by the way, who has both the charm and methodical methods of Patrick Bateman! It’s just wild to see it all unfold. The main twist is not even the biggest twist in this story. It takes quite a turn as this first issue ends. There is just a lot going on here under the hood here and I guarantee you will read it more than once!

If the latest surge in nursery rhyme turned horror movies had original scripts like this they would surely be on to something! I feel 100% confident this could build a lot of momentum over the coming weeks and months. If you were a fan of Stray Dogs this is a must add to your pull list this week. I’ll venture to say it may even be better!

My rating – 10/10 Superb!!
