A new Comixology Originals series from acclaimed writer Stephanie Phillips exploring the horrors of CIA black sites during the 60’s and the conspiracy theories surrounding them. A time when experimentation on private citizens was used as a potential means to fight the war on terror and develop radical new insight into the human psyche.

First off, I have to say the art by Conor Boyle really stands out in this first issue. I was blown away by how engaging and wildly imaginative it was. Parts of it look like a fading dream. Other times it’s like a brightly burning photograph seared into your mind. The colors and details are vividly rendered like one giant acid trip or hallucination. It’s remarkable to look at it. That, coupled with a tight and focused narrative by Phillips lend to what is a very promising first issue. The story is weaved together around what appears to be two different events that lay out the plot of what will be explored in this series. There’s also a lot of wild imagery so it’s hard to tell what is real and what isn’t. With this method you’re almost pulled directly into the hysteria and paranoia of the main character. By the end of the issue we are not exactly sure what is going on but it’s clear someone is either being set up, put through high stress trials of experimentation or possibly both. It’s an eerie and scary look at the darker side of our government and its perception during that time. I really enjoyed this issue and I look forward to what’s next. If you are a fan of Department of Truth or even potentially The X-Files, this is a book that will be right up your alley.

My rating – 9/10 – Great!!

“GLICKMAN” PART 1

This was an interesting start to what could be a promising story. Abril lays out the plot quickly but leaves enough questions to carry our curiosity into the next chapter. The art is black and white and roughly textured like you would see in an old serial crime magazine or newspaper. I feel like there may be some references to the illuminati given the imagery but it’s unclear this early in the story. Definitely will be interesting to see where this goes next!

My rating – 8/10 – Great!!
